Dans cette célèbre histoire, les tentatives du roi Vortigern de construire un château à Dinas Emrys sont mystérieusement déjouées, jusqu'à ce que le garçon Merlin révèle que deux dragons se battent sous le sol - un dragon rouge et un dragon blanc.Libérés de la terre, les dragons rouges triomphent sur les blancs, et cela a été interprété pour annoncer la victoire éventuelle des Britanniques sur les Anglo-Saxons.
